The PAL-V company (Netherlands) announced that the Liberty, which it positions as the world's first production flying car, has received permission to navigate the streets of European Union cities.
Registration and certification of vehicles - especially aircraft - takes a lot of time in the EU. The Liberty is a hang glider that can transform into a gyrocopter. On the ground, it is a three-wheeled vehicle and this is no coincidence: a three-wheeled vehicle is easier to certify than a four-wheeled one.
In the "ground" mode, its movement is provided by a 100-horsepower engine capable of accelerating the device to 100 km / h in less than 9 seconds. In the sky, the Liberty transforms into a two-seater gyrocopter with a push rotor in the rear and a helicopter two-bladed rotor, driven by an independent 200-horsepower engine.
The flight resource is provided by a 100-liter fuel tank, which is enough for almost 3.5 hours of flight, which is equivalent to 500 kilometers. On the ground, this amount of fuel is enough for almost 1,300 km of road. The transformation process from a car to a gyrocopter takes no more than two minutes.
The company says that the Liberty flight certification process has been going on for five years and requires at least another 150-hour flight time to complete successfully, which should be accumulated by 2022. In addition to a driver's license, future owners of Liberty will need a flight license to operate a gyroplane.
