Apple Watch approved treatment for nightmares in the US

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially approved the NightWare digital platform for use as a therapeutic agent. It is designed for use with Apple Watch smartwatches and is designed to get people out of their nightmares. Among the first patients are veterans of the wars with PTSD.

As noted by retired general and now advisor to the NightWare project, Peter Chiarelli, the very phenomenon of PTSD is equated to a disability and the attitude towards it is serious, but the nightmares of soldiers are usually ignored - and this is a huge problem. Sleep is an essential component of wellness therapy, but if a person suffers from nightmares, they cannot fully rest and recover.

The principle of operation of NightWare is based on a long, at least 10 nights, study of the patient's personal characteristics of sleep. The system uses Apple Watch sensors to analyze heart rate, breathing, body movements to learn how to recognize the appearance of a nightmare. And when he learns, he will give a slight vibration through the clock to distract the person, but not wake him up.

Clinical trials on 70 veterans diagnosed with PTSD have shown this strategy to be successful, but research is ongoing and NightWare will be tested on an additional 240 soldiers in 2021. Now the use of this remedy is possible only as prescribed by a doctor, plus it cannot be used in isolation, only as part of a comprehensive treatment. The FDA approves such new products and even speeds up their registration process, but the organization still has many difficulties with the development of regulations for the new "digital therapy" as such.
