The main feature of the little American basilisk lizard is its ability to run on the surface of the water, which inspired a team of scientists from Ben-Gurion University (Israel) to create an unusual robot AmphiSTAR.
AmphiSTAR fits in the palm of your hand. It is propelled by four blade-equipped propellers that are attached to the retractable units. When moving on grass or gravel, they are located at an angle, due to which the blades work like wheels, providing the robot with a very considerable speed of 3.5 m / s.
Once in the water, AmphiSTAR changes the angle of the propellers, which is why its movement is transformed into a "run on water" at a speed of 1.5 m / s. By the way, it can be reduced, and then the robot will move like a regular boat. The developers are planning to create another, "underwater" version.
AmphiStar was presented last week to attendees of the International Conference on Intelligent Robots online.
